2019 Agenda

Sunday, August 11, 2019
Travel Day (All Attendees)
Fly in and get settled in your room. The best places to stay nearby are the “Country Club Plaza” in Kansas City, Missouri.

Delegates: Many who are flying in from out of town have asked to coordinate rides to/from the KC airport. At this time, we know of people landing at 11:30 am, 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm on Sunday, August 11th. To add your own logistical information and coordinate rides, click here:

MESSAGE BOARD FOR RIDES AND ETC.

Students: We have two AirBNB houses reserved and you can check in at 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm (depending on your house assignments) on Sunday, August 11th. Watch for an email and/or Google Calendar invitation for lockbox code and address. Marie Swift will meet you there and help with keycode, check in, introductions, etc. If you are in a pinch or need help, here's Marie's cell phone: 913-961-4030

All: Pop in for a quick drink or light dinner at "Rye Plaza" on Sunday night. Everyone will order and pay on their own. There are two tables for 8 reserved at 6:30 pm and we can always spill over into the bar. Learn more at:

Rye (On the Country Club Plaza)

Many ATLS delegates seem to be staying at the Marriott Country Club Plaza so please look to Uber/Lyft over to Rockhurst University together on Monday morning.
Find hotels near Rockhurst University
On Monday morning, you will need to grab an Uber/Lyft to Rockhurst University (a 10-minute drive each way):

1.  Tell the Uber/Lyft driver to **enter the campus on 54th Street** (off Troost). You will see the Rockhurst signage and the Rockhurst Community Center building right there at the SOUTH entrance to the campus.

2.  Follow the road around past the guard house (if manned, tell them you are coming to a special event at the Science Center). Park anywhere right there.

3.  Walk down the promenade to the first big building on your left (the Science Center).

4. Come in through the main door of the Science Center (big white modern-looking building). Find the elevators or the stairs at the end of that long hallway. Come to the 3rd floor where you will see our registration table and smiling faces.

Communication Skills – Part 2
Body Language and Presence

Marie Swift, President of Impact Communications, is a nationally recognized consultant who has for over twenty years worked exclusively with some of the industry's top financial institutions, investment advisory and financial planning firms. A top-rated speaker at events hosted by FPA, NAPFA, NFL Players Association, Pershing, TD, Schwab and more, Marie is also a prolific writer and contributes to many of the industry’s leading publications.

In this segment, she will get everyone talking about their biggest fears and successes when it comes to public speaking, working with the media and communicating in a more powerful way. We’ll even practice, as a group, doing some of the grounding exercises she will share.

Camera Skills
How to Look Your Best and Ace Every Interview

Pam Krueger, Marie Swift, Maribeth Kuzmeski will bring their collective experience to share with Summit attendees tips for video and television success, including where to look, what to wear, how to stand, best ways to project yourself and much more.

This segment of war stories and advice will set the stage for what’s to come as everyone gets amped up for their 2-minute Thought Leader Interview with Pam (numbers will be assigned and you will step out of the room to work with Pam one-on-one as the day progresses).

You will have time to think about and write down the 3 big questions you want Pam Krueger to ask you during your video interview with her -- and will practice your answers with a peer (prior to actually being on camera later this day).

4 Tips -- What to Wear for Your Video Interview with Pam Krueger:
  1. Solid colors are best -- patterns can cause a problem in any type of recording (they tend to take on a life of their own and can look like they are actually moving).
  2. A little splash of color or bling is fine but don't over do it. The camera loves blue so you can't go wrong with navy blue, royal blue or dusty pale blue. White, off-white and light blue shirts are also good if you are wearing a jacket. Grey, black and beige are fine, too.
  3. Wear what you wear to make a good first impression with a prospective client or COI. Tie or no tie -- that's up to you.
  4. If you wear makeup, put on a little more eye makeup and lipstick than is your normal everyday application (and bring your makeup bag in your bag). Don't forget your own hairspray and brush if you want to touch up in the facilities right before your segment (hallway video set-up).
12:00 – 12:30 pm
Box Lunches / Video Equipment Demonstration & Tips
Create Your Own In-Office Video Studio

12:00 – 4:00 pm
Summit attendees will be assigned numbers.

Then between 12 pm and 4 pm they will be waved into the video shooting area for their 2-minute Thought Leader Interview with Pam Krueger.
12:30 – 1:00 pm

1:45 – 2:15 pm
Using a Book to Open Doors and Turn Heads

Amy Buttell of Lake Effect Creative has  helped hundreds of financial experts to get their words on the page -- in a way that makes their ideas clear, substantial, and memorable. Amy is a champion for financial advisors. Her superpower is translating industry jargon, mish-mashed ideas, and data-based gobbledygook into compulsively readable, clear-as-a-(closing)-bell stories -- stories that actual, non-industry humans want to read. If you are  too busy working with clients and closing deals to write a book, Amy has news for you: writing a book could be one of the best marketing investments ever and you can get it done (in this lifetime) with the right approach.

Amy will deliver a 10 minute motivational speech to get our minds and hearts engaged.

She will then be joined on stage by Marie Swift, Maribeth Kuzmeski and other crowdsourced volunteer experts who will answer all those questions that have been tugging at the corners of your mind:

  • Is it really worth the time and effort to write a book?
  • How do I get this (rather daunting) project done?
  • Do I need a traditional publisher to be seen as a credible book author?
  • How do I turn this beautiful manuscript into a beautiful book?
  • What about book PR, social media, an author website, and other leveraging tactics?
